Do Irish solar installers need an AI receptionist? A plain answer

An AI receptionist is software that answers your business phone with a natural voice, has a real conversation, and does the receptionist jobs: answers common questions, takes the caller’s details, qualifies the enquiry, and books appointments into your calendar. The good ones sound like a person having a chat, not a robot reading a menu.

What it actually does on a solar call

For a solar installer, a properly configured AI receptionist answers the enquiry in seconds — nights and weekends included — and works through the questions that decide whether a caller is a real lead: is it their own house, what’s the roof like, roughly what are the electricity bills, are they interested in the SEAI grant, and when are they hoping to move. Then it books the site survey and sends you a summary by text, with the full recording and transcript kept for you to check.

What it shouldn’t do

A trustworthy AI receptionist refuses as much as it answers. It should never quote a price for your work, never promise a grant amount, never claim savings figures, and never pretend to be human when asked. It should recognise an angry caller or an existing customer and hand those straight to you rather than giving a complaint the chatbot treatment. If a vendor can’t explain their guardrails, that’s your answer about the product.

The cost question

Measured against software, AI receptionists look like another subscription. Measured against the alternatives, the picture changes: a human answering service costs €100–€300 a month and reads from scripts; office staff cost €30,000+ a year; and doing nothing costs whatever your missed calls cost — in Irish solar, where an average install is €8,000–€15,000, a single lost job dwarfs a year of any subscription. The right comparison isn’t price versus price; it’s price versus one missed lead.

How to judge one in five minutes

Don’t read the feature list — ring it. Ask the awkward questions a real homeowner would: how much for a bungalow, is the grant still going, are you a robot. Listen for the pauses (anything over a second feels wrong), listen for honesty on the hard questions, and see whether it actually books something. That’s the whole evaluation. It’s also why Nula, the AI receptionist we’re building for Irish solar installers, leads with a live demo call instead of a brochure — type your name and number and she rings you, so you can judge her the only way that counts.
