What a missed call really costs an Irish solar installer

Picture the moment every installer knows. You’re two storeys up, hands full of rail, and the phone buzzes in your pocket. By the time you’re down, the voicemail light is on — and the homeowner who left it is already talking to the next solar company on Google.

A typical residential solar installation in Ireland runs somewhere between €8,000 and €15,000. That’s what one ring-out can be worth. Not the cost of the call — the cost of the job that call was about to become.

Why speed decides who wins the job

Solar enquiries are impulsive in a way trade work usually isn’t. A homeowner sees a neighbour’s panels go up, or reads about the SEAI grant, and rings three companies in ten minutes. The real research on this is blunter than you’d expect: a Harvard Business Review study that mystery-shopped 2,241 companies with a test enquiry found 23% never called back at all — and the ones who rang within the first hour were roughly seven times more likely to actually win the lead than the ones who waited (we went deeper on that study here). Speed decides who wins the job, because the fast answer catches the homeowner while the enthusiasm is still hot.

That’s the structural problem: the better your installation business is doing, the more time you spend on roofs, and the fewer calls you can answer. Success makes the phone problem worse.

The honest maths

Say you get ten genuine enquiries a week and miss half of them — a normal rate for a crew that’s actually installing. If even one of those five missed callers would have become a job, that’s roughly €10,000 a week in work you never got to quote. Over a year, missing one convertible call a month is a six-figure hole. Voicemail doesn’t fill it: when a job feels time-sensitive, most people just try the next name on the list instead of leaving a message.

What actually works

The fixes, in rising order of cost: divert to a family member who answers well (free, burns out fast), hire an answering service (€100–€300 a month, but they read scripts and can’t answer solar questions), hire office staff (€30,000+ a year, only worth it at scale), or use an AI receptionist that answers instantly, knows your business, and books surveys into your diary. We’re building Nula to be exactly that for Irish solar installers — she answers in seconds, in a warm Irish voice, and texts you the summary before you’re off the roof.

Whatever you choose, choose something. The phone ringing out is the most expensive sound in your business.
